If you visit the Oregon Coast you need to check out Kelly’s Marina at Nehalem Bay. They will set you up for a few hours of crabbing.  You get four crab pots attached to a 50 ft. length of rope with a numbered buoy at the top. In each pot, there are chopped up fish parts for bait.

When you let it down in the water it flattens out to allow the crabs easy access to the bait. You set out in a small boat provided by Kelly’s Marina and put out your pots spaced approximately 50 to 100 yards apart. There are other buoys in the water. You can recognize yours by the color and the number.

You wait a few minutes and then you start pulling in the pots and checking for crabs. It takes a little energy to pull up a crab pot full of crabs. When you put the crab pot in the bottom of the boat you have little tiny crabs running everywhere. You toss the little crabs back in the water. Then you measure the large male crabs. You can keep them if they measure ten inches. Female crabs go back in the water no matter what size. It was so much fun.

When you finish you return to the pier with the male crabs that are at 10 inches or more. Kelly’s Marina cooks the crab serves it to you around a fire pit on the pier.  What an experience. Call ahead to find out the best time of day to get the best catch.
