White Mountains, New Hampshire

The Mt. Washington Auto Road is a narrow, steep, scenic eight-mile road to the top of 6288 ft. Mt. Washington in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. This amazing but somewhat scary 30-minute drive will bring you to the Washington State Park and the Mt. Washington Observatory providing wonderful views of the Great Gulf Wilderness and the Presidential Mountain Range.

What an amazing drive! However, this is not for the faint of heart. There are no guard rails and a one-mile portion of the road is not paved.

Once you pass the tree line in to the alpine zone you feel like you have been transported into another world. Hundreds of boulders line the barren moon-like landscape.

At the top there are several hiking trails, a museum, and a café serving food and drinks. They even have a display showing the name and date of everyone that has died on Mt. Washington. Don’t worry. In 150 years only 3 people have died on the road and one was in a stage coach with a drunken driver. If you are terrified to drive yourself there are guided van tours available and a tram going to the summit. In the winter they have snow coaches that can take you to the top. Always bring a jacket or a sweater even in the summer. It’s cool up there and the winds are always strong.

And while you are in the White Mountains you may want to go hiking in Franconia Notch State Park, or go on a moose tour, or check out the Omni Mt. Washington Resort.
