Mt. LeConte is located in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in eastern Tennessee. At an elevation of 6400 feet it is the highest guest lodge in the eastern United States. The lodge is only accessible on foot. Take one of the five trails to the top and spend the night in rough-hewn log cabins with kerosene lanterns and propane heaters.

You guessed it. There is no electricity and no internet.  There are five trails to the lodge. We took the Alum Bluff Trail because it is the shortest. It took us about four hours to reach the lodge.

We left after lunch, so we would be there in time for supper which is served family style in the dining room at 6:00 pm.

After supper everyone hikes the short distance to the summit to see the sunset. There are no roads to the top, so on Monday each week Llamas bring food up the Trillium Gap Trail.

There are games and reading material in the office and there are rockers on the office and dining room decks. Get up early the next morning to see the sunset and then eat a hearty breakfast before heading back down the trail.
