Mackinac Island is located in Lake Huron between Michigan’s Lower and Upper peninsulas about 4 hours north of Detroit. Going there is like going back in time because there are no motorized motor vehicles. You get around the island on foot, by bicycle, on horseback, or in a horse-drawn carriage.

You can get to the island by a 16-minute ferry ride from St. Ignace or Mackinac City. As you get close to the island you will see the victorian Grand Hotel and the quaint downtown area. When you unload from the ferry there will a porter on a bicycle to take your luggage to your hotel or bed and breakfast.

80% of the island is a state park with numerous hiking and biking trails going to beautiful overlooks and interesting geological formations. There is an 8-mile biking/hiking path that goes around the island. While you are there hop on a horse-drawn carriage for a tour of the island or take a tour of Fort Mackinac. Fort Mackinac is a National Historic Landmark with guides dressed in period costume.

Watch cannon and rifle firing demonstrations and try tea or lunch at the Fort Mackinac Tearoom.

Try your hand at kayaking or paddle boarding or just relax while shopping in the downtown area. While you are shopping be sure and check out the numerous diverse restaurants offering chef inspired fine dining or the many quaint eateries with sandwiches, pizza, or hamburgers. If you don’t stay at the Grand Hotel you must at least take a tour.

It’s a beautiful Victorian hotel where the 1980’s film “Somewhere in Time” was filmed. And it is like going back in time. After 6:30 pm ladies must wear dresses, skirts, blouses, dress sweaters, or dress slacks. Men must wear suit coat, tie, and slacks.

An evening dinner at the Grand Hotel is a memorable experience or try a drink at the Cupola Bar at the very top of the hotel. The views of the Strait of Mackinac and the Mackinac Bridge are stunning from there. If you stay at the Grand Hotel you can play tennis, golf, or lawn games. At night there are many venues offering live music and/or dancing. Check out Mackinac Island for a vacation you won’t forget.
